Trg bana Josipa Jelačića is where the case opens, and the trail leaves the main square for both halves of the old town. You climb towards Lotrščak Tower and St Mark's Church in the upper town, then come back down for the Cathedral of Zagreb. It is a detective game played at walking pace, with Zagreb itself standing in for the crime scene.The upper town means a short climb or a ride on the funicular, so there is some height in it, while the rest stays flat; the route suits families with children, friends, couples and work groups equally well, and playing alone is no problem. One ticket covers a team of up to four sharing a single phone, and a bigger party splits into several teams, each finding its own way between Zrinjevac and the streets above. Clues arrive as coded messages, photo tasks and statements from digital characters whose stories fail to line up: a number to decipher near the Art Pavilion, a photograph to take among the trees, a witness who claims to have been somewhere else entirely. Between the Croatian National Theatre and the Zagreb City Museum the list of suspects gets shorter with every puzzle.With two or more teams out at once it turns into a race, which is why groups use it for teambuilding as much as for a day off. Break for lunch, come back to the evidence afterwards, and close the case in Zagreb whenever the group is ready.
